Pseudoscorpions are tiny arachnids that resemble miniature scorpions (without the stinger). They are incredibly beneficial micro-predators in bioactive setups, preying on mites, springtails, small insect larvae, and other microfauna. “Everglades” is likely a native Florida species adapted to warm, humid environments.
Basic Info:
• Size: ~1–3 mm
• Lifespan: 1–2 years (possibly more with ideal care)
• Temperament: Shy, non-aggressive, beneficial micro-predator
• Use: Cleanup crew / pest control / observation species
Enclosure Requirements:
• Container: Small plastic deli cup with ventilation or placed directly into a bioactive setup (vivarium, terrarium)
• Substrate: Moisture-retaining substrate like coconut fiber, sphagnum moss, or a mix of organic soil with leaf litter
• Decor: Pieces of bark, cork, leaf litter, moss — anything that provides micro-habitats and hiding spaces
• Size Needs: Very small — even a condiment cup can house a colony for observation. In bioactive tanks, they will self-regulate population.
Environmental Conditions:
• Humidity: 75–90%
Keep substrate lightly moist but not soaked; mist occasionally
• Temperature: 70–82°F
Room temp is fine; avoid extremes below 65°F or above 90°F
• Ventilation: Moderate; good airflow with maintained humidity (use breathable lids or micro mesh)
Feeding:
• Diet:
Naturally preys on:
• Springtails
• Mites
• Fungus gnat larvae
• Baby isopods
• Microarthropods
(Great for pest control in vivariums)
• In Cultures:
Supplement with springtails or micro-prey if not in a full ecosystem. You can also introduce pinhead crickets or fruit fly larvae in small amounts if needed.
Compatibility in Bioactive Setups:
• Dart frog tanks
• Small lizard and gecko enclosures
• Invert setups (tarantulas, millipedes, roaches)
• Vivaria with springtails and isopods
Behavior:
• Will not harm plants or larger tank mates
• Not visible often due to small size and reclusive nature
Pro Tips:
• Avoid dry conditions — they’ll die off quickly without humidity
• Don’t flood the substrate — they’ll drown in standing water
• Pair with springtails and isopods for a balanced microfauna crew
• Use leaf litter and cork to encourage colony growth and visibility
