Basic Info

Type:Climbing cactus

Growth Habit:Vining, needs support

Light Needs:Full sun (6–8 hours/day)

Mature Size:10–20 feet long with support

Hardiness Zones:USDA 10–11 (can grow in pots in cooler zones)

Light

Dragon fruit cacti love the sun!

Indoors:Place in the brightest spot available (south- or west-facing window).

Outdoors:Full sun is ideal, but in extremely hot climates, provide afternoon shade to prevent scorching.

Watering

Water deeplywhen the top 2–3 inches of soil are dry.

Cut back in winter when growth slows.

Avoid overwatering—these are still cacti, and soggy roots = root rot.

Tip: When in doubt, wait a day before watering again.

Soil

Well-draining soil is key.Use cactus or succulent mix. You can improve drainage by adding perlite or sand.

pH range:6.0–7.0 (slightly acidic to neutral)

Temperature & Humidity

Ideal temps:65–85°F (18–29°C)

Tolerates brief drops to ~32°F (0°C) but must be brought indoors in frost-prone areas.

Humidity:Moderate is fine. Not picky!

Feeding

Feed during growing season (spring–summer):

Use a balanced cactus fertilizeror a low-nitrogen fertilizer(like 6-9-9) monthly.

Stop feeding in winter.

Support & Pruning

Provide a trellis or staketo support its climbing habit.

Prune to control size and encourage airflow.

Remove any weak, crossing, or crowded stems.

Flowering & Fruiting

Typically flowers in late spring to early summer.

Flowers bloom at nightand only last for one night—pollinated by moths or bats in nature.

If pollinated, fruits develop within 30–50 days.

Note: Most varieties are self-sterile, so you’ll need another variety nearby for fruit unless it’s a self-fertile type.

Propagation

Propagates easily from stem cuttings.

Let cuttings callous over for a few days, then plant in well-draining soil.

Roots form in 2–4 weeks with warmth and moisture.

Common Issues:

• Yellowing- Overwatering or poor drainage

• No flowers- Not enough light or is too young

• Rotting base- too much water or can cold temps

Pro Tips:

Want fruit? Pollinate by handusing a small brush if kept indoors.

Grow in a large pot(at least 10–15 gallons) if keeping in containers long-term.

Dragon fruit cactus grows fast—be ready to repot or train it as it climbs!
