Height:
• Size: Calathea “Rattlesnake” typically grows to a height of 18-24 inches (45-60 cm), and its leaves can spread out up to 12 inches (30 cm) in width, making it a medium-sized plant that works well in terrariums or palladiums of appropriate size.
Lighting:
• Light Requirements: Calatheas prefer bright, indirect light but can tolerate medium light levels. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause the leaves to burn or fade in color.
• Terrarium/Palladium Lighting: In a terrarium or palladium, ensure the lighting is soft and diffused, as direct light will scorch the leaves. LED grow lights with a spectrum suitable for plants will work well, but make sure the intensity isn’t too high.
Maintenance:
• Pruning: Remove any dead or yellowing leaves to maintain the plant’s appearance and promote healthy growth. Calatheas are not heavy feeders, so avoid over-fertilizing.
Humidity/Watering:
• Humidity: Calathea “Rattlesnake” thrives in high humidity levels, which makes it an ideal choice for palladiums and terrariums. Aim for humidity levels between 60-80%. In environments with lower humidity, misting the plant or using a humidifier can help.
• Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. It’s important to let the top inch of soil dry out slightly before watering again. Over-watering or letting the plant sit in water can lead to root rot, so make sure your setup has good drainage.
Additional Tips:
• Soil: Calatheas prefer well-draining, rich soil. A peat-based mix with added perlite or orchid bark works well to provide the right balance of moisture retention and drainage.
• Temperature: Keep the plant in temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C), avoiding sudden temperature drops or cold drafts.
By providing the right humidity, light, and care, Calathea “Rattlesnake” will thrive in your palladium or terrarium setup, adding a touch of beauty with its unique foliage.
