Height:
• Size: Fittonia typically grows to about 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) in height with a spread of 8-12 inches (20-30 cm), though its size may be smaller in more confined spaces like a terrarium or paludarium.
Lighting:
• Light Requirements: Fittonia thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light, but its vibrant leaf color and growth may suffer.
• Terrarium/Paludarium Lighting: Use a full-spectrum LED or fluorescent lightto simulate natural sunlight, but avoid direct sun exposure as it can scorch the leaves. Aim for around 10-12 hours of light per day.
Maintenance:
• Pruning: Regular pruning is key to maintaining a compact and bushy appearance. Trim leggy or overgrown stems and remove dead or yellowing leaves to encourage fresh growth.
Humidity/Watering:
• Humidity: Fittonia thrives in high humidity. In a terrarium or paludarium, aim for humidity levels around 60-80%. Higher humidity helps the plant maintain its vibrant leaf color and overall health.
• Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid letting it sit in water to prevent root rot. Water when the top inch of the soil feels dry. In a terrarium, condensation should help maintain moisture levels, but check for signs of dryness in the soil.
Additional Tips:
• Temperature: Fittonia prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F (18°C-27°C). Keep it away from cold drafts or extreme heat.
• Soil: Use a well-draining soil. We recommend zoo med ReptiSoil or our Scaberlabs ABG Mix.
With these conditions, Fittonia will thrive in your paludarium or terrarium, adding vibrant greenery and texture. Just ensure the right balance of light, humidity, and moisture!
